Set up Multifactor Authentication (MFA) using Microsoft Authenticator
This is for first-time setup of MFA to use Microsoft Authenticator app as a sign-in method. If you already have an existing sign-in method, refer to Set up alternate Multifactor Authentication (MFA) sign-in method.
Before you proceed, you would need both a computer and mobile device to set up MFA.
Follow the steps below to download Microsoft Authenticator for your Android or iOS device and set up your MFA.
- Download Microsoft Authenticator from Google Play Store or Apple App Store

- On your computer, go to https://aka.ms/mfasetup
- If prompted to login, enter your <userID>@nus.edu.sg (for staff/visitor) or <userID>@u.nus.edu (for student), and click Next
- Sign in with your NUS-ID and Password
- When prompted for “More information required”, click Next
- As you have already installed Microsoft Authenticator in Step 1, click Next to proceed
- On your mobile phone, launch the Microsoft Authenticator app:
- For first time setup, you will be prompted to allow notification for Microsoft Authenticator and to add account
- If you are already using Microsoft Authenticator previously, you can add account by tapping the “+” icon on the top of the Authenticator page
- Tab Work or school account and tab Scan a QR code
On your computer, click Next to proceed.
- Use your Microsoft Authenticator app to scan the QR code and follow the instructions on your phone to connect with your account. Once completed, click Next to proceed.
- A test notification will be sent to your Microsoft Authenticator app. Enter the matching number on your phone.
- Once approved, you will get the following screen. Click Next to continue.
- You have successfully set up your MFA. Click Done to complete the setup.
Note: The next time you sign-in to any Microsoft services using your NUS account, you might also be prompted to approve the sign in request on your Microsoft Authenticator app.
